Do I need to have previous gym experience to start powerlifting?

No, definitely not! If you’re completely new to the gym environment we can start with the basics and introduce all the important aspects of training alongside the 3 main lifts. We will spend a bit longer focusing on technique, building a routine and increasing your confidence.

How much do I need to be able to lift to start powerlifting?

Nothing! There is no minimum weight for anyone to get into powerlifting. Normally for the 3 lifts, the lowest weight that is used is the 20kg barbell, however there are variations that can be used if we need to start under 20kg and work our way up.

Do I need any equipment to do powerlifting?

To get started in powerlifting, no, you don’t need any equipment. For newer lifters I would advise to focus on the squat, bench and deadlift without equipment first. This gives us time to focus on the movements and make improvements to form and technique so we’ve got a good foundation. Then we can start to introduce equipment.

Most lifters will introduce a lifting belt first. After that, there are other things like knee sleeves and wrist wraps that lifters may choose to use.

If you go on to compete, you will need to make sure you are wearing the correct things, which includes a singlet. There is a list of selected equipment that is allowed in competitions available on the IPF website.

There is a lot of equipment out there and knowing what to use and when can get a bit complicated but don’t worry! I will go over everything with you during our coaching sessions and check-ins. There’s also lots of information available about equipment, clothing and rules on the IPF website.

How much do I need to be able to lift to start competing?

To start competing, so long as you can lift the bar you can enter. There is no minimum weight requirements for novice or regional competitions. However, to compete at national events, you will need to achieve the qualifying total for your weight class and age. Qualifying totals are listed on the British Powerlifting website.

When should I start competing?

So long as you feel confident enough to step onto the platform and you can safely perform the squat, bench and deadlift, I say go for it! For beginners that want to get into competing, getting on the platform earlier can help build confidence and experience. It will help you better understand the process of competitions and help us identify areas to work on in training. Newer lifters typically recover slightly faster than more experienced lifters meaning you may be able to compete more often at the start of your lifting career which is great for getting the practise in!

Do I need to be a certain bodyweight to compete?

No, you do not need to be a certain bodyweight to enter a competition. I would advise lifters new to competing to enter a competition at their normal, comfortable bodyweight instead of trying to lose or gain weight to be in a particular weight category. This means you can spend more time focusing on training and preparing and it’s one less thing that could add stress to the day. As you get more experienced and continue to compete, you may want to lose/gain weight to be in a preferred category that would put you in a better position for the competition. It’s also important to remember as you progress, that should you qualify for a national event, you need to compete in the same weight category.
